The island of Boipeba has a lot to offer. Beautiful natural landscapes, beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters, a rich culture and a peaceful environment for you to detox from the big city. On this island there is a little area where you can experience all of this at once. We are talking about Cova da Onça, an essential tourist spot for anyone who wants to have the full Boipeba experience. Come with us to learn a little more about this place. You need to visit it!

What is Cova da Onça?

If Boipeba is no longer a very famous destination, Cova da Onça is a tourist spot even more unknown to travelers. This natural sanctuary is a fishing village, formerly known as São Sebastião. The name “Cova” is given thanks to the presence of a cave in the place. There is no shortage of stories about this cave, some say that it was used by Portuguese Jesuits to hide from natives, others say that the name was given because a jaguar took over the place in the past. This already shows that the environment is surrounded by a mysterious air.

How to get to Cova da Onça?

Leaving Vila de Boipeba, you can go to Cova da Onça in two ways: by land or by sea.

By land: This option is for those who are more adventurous and like trails, as it is a medium-level walk through the middle of the island. Along the way you will be immersed in nature, culture and local history. On the way back, you can choose to take a boat or walk back.

By sea: This is the most famous option, normally taken by tourists on “Around the Island” tours. It is also possible to take boats that go directly to Cova da Onça.

Reasons to visit Cova da Onça

1 – The perfect place for a quiet afternoon

If the coast of Boipeba is already great for relaxing, in Cova da Onça this relaxation is doubled. Even further away from civilization and with much fewer tourists around, here you can spend a worry-free afternoon, surrounded by the beauty of the sea and the greenery that surrounds the village.

2 – Immersion in local history

The village of Cova da Onça is very traditional; the well-preserved historic architecture gives the impression that you have traveled back in time. Furthermore, if you choose the trail, you will also pass through other places such as Monte Alegre, which is an old quilombo, and the Caminho dos Piaçaveiros, which was used by farm workers in the past.

3 – The best food on the entire island

It is impossible to talk about Cova da Onça without mentioning its cuisine. As you would expect from a fishing village, here are the most delicious seafood and fish dishes from across the region. Thanks to the fame of the place, on “Around the Island” tours it is normal for boats to stop here for lunch.

It is worth remembering that these reasons are only for Cova da Onça, Ilha de Boipeba still has many more tourist attractions and unforgettable activities waiting for you. So, how about starting to plan your trip to your destination? Here at Abaeté we make your trip easier with exclusive flights.
